Dear Dr. Donohue: I am 57 and play softball twice a week and racquetball two to three times a week. my job requires an extreme amount of physical exertion. I am able to do this in spite of my earlier years of partying with no regard for exercise. when I turned 50, I stopped all the negative activities and became health-conscious.

When and how are the best ways of getting ready to play sports to avoid injuries? will stretching and warming up do it?

Dear R.Z.: Stretching increases flexibility. Flexible joints are able to move through a greater range of motion than stiff joints. A flexible ankle, for example, ought to be less likely to suffer a sprain.

Sprains are torn joint ligaments. I have to admit, however, that proof that stretching and increased flexibility lessen injuries is not all that great. Some experts feel that stretching does nothing at all as far as injury prevention.

Many sports, however, require great flexibility: gymnastics, diving, pitching, racquet sports and golf. In these sports, flexible joints improve a person's performance.

The best way to stretch is to move a joint as far as possible without pain and hold that position for 20 to 30 seconds. Relax and repeat the stretch five to 10 times. Practice will make it possible to increase the extent of the stretch.

A shoulder stretch is done with the arms held out to the sides at shoulder level and with palms facing up. Bring the arms backward as if you were trying to touch your hands. Hold that position. Repeat.

For back and hamstring (the back of the thigh muscles) stretches, stand with feet shoulder width apart and head and arms dangling downward. Bend farther until you feel a stretch in the back and in the back of the thighs. Hold. Repeat.

Calf stretches are easily done on a stair. let your heels project off the back of the stair. Rise on your toes and then lower yourself until your heels are beneath stair level, and hold that position.

Warm-ups do decrease the injury potential. A simple warm-up is jogging in place. it gets blood circulating to muscles, ligaments and joints, and limbers them.

Dear Dr. Donohue: I am a female and a runner. I have been running since high school. I am now 32. I have developed a burning pain in the middle of my pelvis, and it has forced me to stop running. what do you think this is?

Dear S.J.: it could be osteitis pubis. the pelvis is shaped like a bowl. In front, the two sides of the bowl form a seam. when a person runs, shifting weight from one leg to the other irritates that middle seam and inflames it -- osteitis pubis. it has a poor blood supply, so healing takes a long time. In addition to rest, an anti-inflammatory drug like Aleve or Advil might help.

You can stay in shape by swimming.

I'd feel better about this if you'd have your doctor examine you to verify this presumed diagnosis. other things cause similar pain.

Dear Dr. Donohue: you answered a question by stating that heartbeat and pulse counting is an assurance of quality exercise. I have been using yoga, and I have become aware that complete stretching increases strength and balance along with teaching proper breathing. Please don't overlook these aspects of body health.

There are aspects of good health other than aerobic training. Yoga, tai chi and other exercise techniques don't get the attention they merit. Balance training, one of the benefits of these exercises, is something we all need. Our sense of balance deteriorates with age.

One of the most common issues the Computer Peeps encounter with each client is unnecessary, unused programs.

Great question!  there are a bunch of little programs on your computer that do pretty cool stuff.  for example, Java is software that helps you do things like upload pictures to Facebook.  It’s not a program you run everyday and it’s pretty subtle, but it’s something you need (and want, even if you don’t know it).

The problem is, companies like to partner up and help one another out by “marketing” their partners…

Not right in orlando, but you should go check out Cocoa Beach and go to Ron Jons Surf shop...awesome place!! also, theres a place near/in Orlando called Discovery Cove where you can swim with dolphins

MGM Studio, Arabian Knight show, Gatorland, Sea World, Wet'n Wild, Golf, Outlet Mall Shopping, Good Restaurants are all along International Drive, if you drive down you see so many to choose from. I like Japanese restaurant called Rangetsu there, nice quality food and drum show. If you can stretch your travel, I would go to NASA its very educational.

you could go shopping downtown...they have a lot of neat stores and the florida mall is pretty cool. also, you could go to sea world or cyrpress gardens. just do a search for activities in orlando, fl and see what you come up with.
Oh yeah I forgot about the Kennedy Space Center...I went as a kid one time when we were in Orlando...that was pretty cool.

Kennedy Space Center isn't THAT far of a drive - highly recommended!

International Drive is pretty cool - lots of touristy things.

If you're looking for clubs and restaurants, City Walk at Universal is nice. There's also Church Street, but last time I was there it was kind of a younger crowd.

Are you looking for a great place to take a vacation? There is no vacation like visiting Kissimmee, Florida and this summer is the best time to visit Kissimmee. I would love to take my husband and daughter on this vacation because we all love to visit the amusement parks. This location is only minutes of south Orlando. Hi, im planning on moving to Orlando Fl, and was wondering if anyone can tell me the good things about orlando, also are there really alligators in orlando? and do they actually get in your house?

The alligators don't generally bother people unless they've been fed by people. then they lose their natural fear. you will rarely see them, though they can be in any pond. There's been a few dog gulping stories around the apartments though. they don't generally get around houses unless they're next to a body of water. I'd be a lot more concerned about the thugs in the neighborhood, there's a high crime rate in Orlando. (#11 in the US)
Most anything is here and there's palm trees. As you know, the weather is generally sunny & warm to hot. Economywise, I wouldn't call the quality of life in general great unless you have a better than average job. the cost of living in ratio to pay is not too good and the unemployment rate is above the national average.

Although newly signed wide receiver Huey Whittaker (6'5, 220 lbs.) has the size to compete with the backcourt of most professional basketball teams, he hopes that size will allow him to tower over much shorter defensive backs on the gridiron.

"I pretty much try to use my size and the width of my body to shield away defenders," Whittaker said. "A lot of guys think just because I'm tall that I have no speed, so I try to use that as well and then use the strength in my hands to catch the football."

Whittaker joined the team last week after leading the Spokane Shock of the Arena Football League to an ArenaBowl championship.

The University of South Florida product came up big in the championship game, catching eight passes for 82 yards and four touchdowns in the Shock's 69-57 win over the Tampa Bay Storm. it was just a continuation of what he did in the regular season, as he caught 144 passes for 1,637 yards and 37 scores in leading Spokane to a league-best 13-3 record.

"I really wasn't even sure about going to Spokane in the first place, but all worked out, it was great to be able to bring a championship there and hopefully we will do the same thing here," he said.

After leaving USF second in career receptions with 117 and third-best 1,447 receiving yards in school history, Whittaker signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2004. his closest call to making a National Football League roster came with the new York Jets in 2009 when he survived all preliminary cuts but was waived just prior to the start of the season.

He has also spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFL, the Frankfurt Galaxy in NFL-Europe, but has registered most of his career numbers with the Tampa Bay Storm, Utah Blaze, and most recently the Spokane Shock in the AFL.

In his AFL career, Whittaker has recorded 276 receptions for 3,255 yards and 70 touchdowns. Should he make the Tuskers final roster, he will be playing in his 20th football game of the season when Florida plays Las Vegas on September 18th after participating in 19 games with the Shock.

"I'm actually feeling really good right now physically, thankfully God has done some great things with my body and I'm ready to play some more," said Whittaker after Monday's training camp session. "I was also playing linebacker and special teams in the AFL so I took a little bit extra beating, but I had a week off before coming here and I feel healthy."

Gruden's offense calls for a lot of passing plays while taking advantage of his receivers' size and speed. so it is somewhat fitting that Whitaker will be playing for receivers coach Ike Hilliard, a former college star who excelled in Steve Spurrier's "Fun n Gun" aerial assault at the University of Florida.

Hilliard, who is in his first season in charge of the Tuskers wide receivers, believes that the size of Whittaker, along with teammates Chas Gessner (6'5, 218 lbs) and Nick Moore (6'4 190 lbs.) will enable the team to make big plays down the field.

"Since Huey is new we just have to get him going on the terminology of the offense," Hillard said. "His size is everything that the roster states and having him out here will be a big advantage for us. thanks to that size, the margin of error for our quarterbacks is greater."

There is no doubt that Whittaker is excited to be a part of Gruden's offense after playing against his coach for several years in the AFL. Gruden should be just as excited to have Whittaker as just another weapon for quarterback Brooks Bollinger to target in the passing game.

"Playing for Jay has been a lot of fun so far, I just have to learn the tweaks in the routes of the offense," Whittaker said of Gruden's offense. "He wants to make plays and score touchdowns and I love that so it has been great."

"Players like Huey can create real match-up problems, especially against smaller corners," Gruden added. "A lot of times a corner will do everything right, but a bigger receiver will still make the play."

FLORIDA TUSKERS SATURDAY CAMP NOTES: Defensive lineman Jon Bradley returned to training camp on Monday...he had missed the last three practices to be with his wife, who gave birth to Jon Bradley Jr. (9-lbs.) on August 27, 2010...Jon reported mother and child were doing fine...Head coach Jay Gruden is hoping several members of his offensive and defensive line return to practice this week, so he can hold a 30-40 play scrimmage on either Thursday or Friday of this week...Gruden had to cancel last Saturday's planned scrimmage because of injuries on both lines..."For the most part they are not serious injuries but nagging ones. we need to get some live work in so we can evaluate these players prior to next week's 'cut-down' day," Gruden said. "Until we see some of these guys live, it's really tough to evaluate."...Line is not the only place where injuries have taken a toll on the Tuskers...QB Chris Greisen (back) and WR Chas Gessner (thigh) were also held out of practice on Monday...In order to battle the heat and rain, Gruden has moved the start of practice up to 8:30 a.m...daily video clips on the Tuskers, including interviews with players and coaches are available by becoming a Florida Tuskers fan on Facebook...single game tickets to the Tuskers Sept. 30 home opener with Las Vegas are now available by calling 407-545-8123.

I am visiting orlando in Mid November and i want to know what are the things i must see/visit in orlando. Every one i ask, they say Disney and Universal. what i want to know is

1. what is there to do in Disney & universal ( is it a resort or a theme park for fun)
2. WHen i try to buy tickets for disney & Universal there are many such as magic hopper etc.. CAn you please suggest a few that would be for visiting for 3-4 days.

Disney World is the best! There are 4 main theme parks at the resort. Magic Kingdom is the one with all the classic disney rides like Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Carribean, Jungle Cruise, Splash Mountain and countless others. Epcot is my favorite of the 4 main parks. It has the large golf ball (spaceship earth ride) which is lots of fun and a very relaxing dark ride. It also has the world's showcase which is awesome. you walk around to all the different countries. They have shows for all the countries, restaurants, shops and a few of the countries have their own ride. Definitly ride Maelstrom in Norway. Its awesome. also ride Figment, the seas with Nemo, Soarin, living with the land and test track.
MGM is the smaller of the 4 parks. if you like thrill rides I suggest rock and roller coaster as well as twilight tower of terror. great movie ride is a lot of fun. It takes you throughout famous scenes of movies. Animal Kingdom is lots of fun. I recommend the Kilamanjaro safari's, Dinosaur, its tough to be a bug, and Expedition Everest.

Personally Univeral is just so so to me. They got rid of a back to the future a few months ago and I thought thatw as the best ride there. ET is a fun bicycle ride with lots of neat effects and animatronics.

Also if you have time checkout Sea World. The shark encounter, stingray tank and killer whale shows are great.

I suggest buying a Disney Park Hopper ticket. you can go to several disney parks in a day with that. also if you like going to different restaurants buy the Dining package. it will save you a bundle on meals.

After many trips, I believe Disney World is the premier attraction in Orlando. It has FOUR separate theme parks plus lots of hotels and other activities on-property (golf courses, water parks). you can easily get picked up at the airport, taken to your Disney hotel, and never leave property for a couple of weeks.

So for 3-4 days: well, you could visit one park each day. To me, Animal Kingdom is a half-day park. Possibly Disney-MGM Studios could be done half-day, also. I really like this park and do a lot of stuff twice, so I always allow a full day here.

Then there is Epcot and the Magic Kingdom. Magic Kingdom is what most people think of when they think Disney - big Cinderella's castle, lots of rides that appeal to kids or "big kids!" It's the original, classic Disney park. So I would suggest you try to go to it one day.

For Disney tickets, you will save money buying multi-day passes. then you can decide what you want to "add-on" to your pass. if you choose to add the park hopper option, you can go to as many parks as you want in one day, using only one day of your ticket. if you don't have the hopper option, you can only go to one park a day. but you could leave for an afternoon break and come back later to that same park, if you wanted. if it were me, I would just buy a basic three (or four) day pass with no add-ons. There's so much to do in Disney, I don't think you'll use the add-ons.

Universal is made up of two parks, Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. Not a big fan of Studios. Islands is pretty good and has a lot of thrill rides (big coasters, etc). However, after several trips I can easily do BOTH parks in just one day. For your first trip, you probably would want to allocate one full day to each park. Again, though, I think Disney is far superior to Universal. you can buy two-park, multi-day tickets to Universal, too.
