On October 18, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced a $6 million Florida Career Growth Fund grant award to Sumter County to help complete a 1.5-mile road expansion serving a 300-acre industrial estate. The expansion will support manufacturing and construction, according to a news release from the governor’s office, creating nearly 7,000 jobs and adding an estimated $336 million in additional income to Sumter County residents.
The award will focus on the final stage of CR 525E 301 through CR 514 to expand to four lanes, according to a Sumter County press release.
“This road currently serves as an industrial corridor for the rapidly developing Rick Scott Industrial Park. The expansion of the road will also lead to development of the proposed 1,000-acre project, the adjacent CSX Railroad, and the Monarch Ranch Industrial Supersite.” The next step in the process is approval on grant agreement and commencement of final phase design work, and this is the local matching commitment for the construction funding provided by this award.”
DeSantis made his announcement as part of a multi-week long tour of the state highlighting job growth, workforce training initiatives and infrastructure investments in small, rural communities.
The Florida Career Growth Scholarship Fund is an economic development program designed to enhance public infrastructure and workforce training throughout the state. Proposals are reviewed by DEO and Enterprise Florida (EFI) and then selected by the Governor.
In 2020-2021, awards of $74 million are available for projects focused on rapid development of a highly skilled workforce and on infrastructure initiatives that attract businesses, create jobs, and boost economic growth, according to the state’s news release.
DEO and EFI are currently accepting proposals. For more information, visit www.floridajobs.org/jobgrowth.
