AdventHealth letter sets COVID-19 vaccine deadlines for employees

Orlando, Florida. AdventHealth is setting deadlines for employees to get vaccinated against COVID-19 or suspend danger, according to a letter sent to employees Tuesday.

In the letter, AdventHealth President and CEO Terry Shaw said the deadlines are part of plans to comply with the federal vaccine mandate, which is required because the health care company participates in Medicare and Medicaid programs.

According to the letter, employees have until Monday, December 6, to get their first shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or a single injection of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The company then set a specific date on Tuesday, January 4 for the second dose of the two vaccines.

Employees can also apply for an exemption, and the deadline for this is Wednesday, December 1. AdventHealth allows waivers for medical or religious reasons, and they must be approved by the company.

AdventHealth says in the letter that anyone who has not received an approved exemption or initial vaccine dose by December 6 will face suspension.

According to the letter, more than 74% of AdventHealth employees have been vaccinated. Given the heavy toll the pandemic has taken, Shaw says, protecting the AdventHealth team is his top priority.

“I would like to thank those of you who made the decision to vaccinate,” Shaw said. “Between now and December 6, I hope that those who have not made a decision to either vaccinate or obtain an approved exemption will do so, and that we may continue to serve united in our mission.”

Shaw’s letter also refers to lawsuits pending in federal court challenging the vaccine’s mandate. He says that even if the authorization is delayed in court, they will still process requests for exemption.

The Florida legislature is currently holding a special session to combat the vaccine and other states related to COVID-19.
