Berlin – Amazon says it plans to reduce the use of plastic packaging in Germany after complaints that the online retailer is contributing to the growth of mountains of waste.

The company said Monday that its German logistics hub will replace all single-use plastic packaging with paper bags or cardboard boxes by the end of the year.

The company said exceptions are possible when third-party sellers offer products in re-labeled packaging for delivery, and when couriers are required to leave products at outdoor locations during rain.

Environmental groups in Germany have long urged Amazon, as one of the largest online retailers, to lead the way in reducing unnecessary waste.
