American Music Awards May Crown Pop Star Olivia Rodrigo
New York Olivia Rodrigo turned her “Sour” album into a super sweet album at the American Music Awards on Sunday, entering the night as the lead nominee with a nod to Artist of the Year and New Artist of the Year.
The Disney actor, singer-songwriter has seven nominations, beating five-time winner The Weeknd with six. He will also face Rodrygo in the Artist of the Year category alongside BTS, Ariana Grande, Drake and Taylor Swift.
The fan-voted awards show will be broadcast live from Los Angeles on ABC. The nominees are based on live broadcasts, albums, digital sales, radio broadcasts, and social activism, and reflect the time period from September 25, 2020 until September 23, 2021. Cardi B hosts for the first time.
Broadcast highlights will include Carrie Underwood and Jason Aldean singing the duet “If I Don’t Love You”, Ken Brown’s performance of “One Mississippi” from Tennessee State University, and New Edition and New Kids on the Block performing together for the first time.
A previous scheduled screening of “Butter” by BTS and Megan Thee Stallion has been canceled after the rapper gave personal reasons for leaving him on Saturday. Instead, Coldplay and BTS will sing their song “My Universe”.
Other artists include Jennifer Lopez, Bruno Mars, and Anderson Buck. Join SilkSonic, Bad Bunny, Diplo, Mickey Guyton and Tyler, The Creator. The Italian rock band and the winners of the Eurovision Måneskin competition will make their debut at the United States Awards.
Reggaeton star Bad Bunny, new R&B Giveon, and Doja Cat each have five nominations each. In the New Artist of the Year category, Rodrigo joins Jevonne, 24K Golden, Masked Wolf and The Kid Laroy.
Swift, who currently holds the record for the most awarded female artist in AMA history at number 32, could expand her streak. It was nominated for three awards in total, including Favorite Pop Album for “Forever”.
The AMAs added new categories this year, including favorite hit songs, favorite gospel artist, and favorite Latin duo or group.
Rapper Pop Smoke, who was murdered in 2020, has been nominated in three categories, including Favorite Hip Hop Album and Favorite Hip Hop Artist, and could win his first posthumous award.
Country star Morgan Wallen has two nominations in the country categories, but he won’t be included in the awards show after he was filmed in a video that uses racial slurs.
If Rodrigo won the majority of the awards she was nominated for, that would put her in good company. Olivia Newton-John and Justin Bieber tied for four awards they won in their first year.
