Florida Secretary of Environmental Protection Sean Hamilton and Chief Science Officer Dr. Mark Raines joined the governor.
The press conference comes a day after DeSantis proposed investing $25 million to repair Miami’s Freedom Tower, a historic building also known as the “Ellis Island of the South,” where Cuban refugees received government assistance after leaving the communist island.
DeSantis said the amount will be included as part of his recommendations on the legislative budget. The Republican governor said the 96-year-old tower needs urgent structural repairs, but the money will also be used to redesign the exhibits to receive more visitors.
Meanwhile, the Florida legislature is holding a special session this week to discuss proposals to allow workers to opt out of COVID-19 vaccine mandates and to allow parents to sue schools for anonymity requirements.
