Hathaway scores twice, Capitals loses Kings score streak 2-0

Angels Garnet Hathaway scored twice late in the third half as the Washington Capitals beat Los Angeles 2-0 on Wednesday night, surpassing the Kings’ eight-point streak.

The match was goalless until 3:30 was left, when John Carlson spotted Jonathan Quick playing off position and flipped a pass to Hathaway, who was able to drive it into the net.

Then Hathaway added a goal free of the net before it left 1:18. He has five goals per season and six points in his last four games.

Ilya Samsonov saved 34 saves for the second time this season and the fifth of his career.

Kwik, who stopped 36 shots, a four-game winning streak was cut short

Los Angeles had two scoring chances in the second but it came out empty. Samsanov saved a shot from Trevor Moore’s wrist seven minutes into the period. He then blocks Matt Roy’s shot from the point and two subsequent rebounding chances by Moore late in the period.

Washington’s best chance on a pair of one-off timers came by Alexander Ovechkin from the powerhouse showdown circuit during the second and third periods that Kwik was able to stop.

The Capitals were the seventh team in league history and the first since Montreal in 2016 to face two different teams on consecutive days with a point streak of eight games or more. They lost to Anaheim 3-2 in overtime on Tuesday.
