Newton starts QB for Panthers, Walker can still play
Charlotte, Nick — Panthers coach Matt Roll said Cam Newton will start Sunday in the quarterback against the Washington FA.
Rolle said BJ Walker, who kicked off the Carolinas’ 34-10 win over the Arizona Cardinals last week, can still see the excitement as well because there are parts of the game plan that Newton is still learning.
“He did a really great job learning the game plan for this week,” Roll said of Newton, the 2015 League Player of the Year. “There is obviously a lot to learn and there are some parts where he obviously might have a better understanding than the others. But he worked really hard. And he’s really a smart player, a smart midfielder.”
Newton scored a goal – one lunge and pass – his first two touches against the Cardinals. He played 12% of the team’s offensive plays after signing with the team just three days before the match.
As for Walker’s role, Rule said, “There are certain parts of the offense that Cam doesn’t get much into yet, so we’ll have both players ready to play and maybe use both.”
