Oxford, England: The Rhodes Trust has announced the 2022 Class of Rhodes American Scholars, which includes the largest number of women ever selected for a one-year scholarship.

For 2022, 22 of the 32 US students selected to study at Oxford University in England are women.

“It feels great to be a part of this historic moment, as a woman and as a woman of the South,” said Louise Frank, 21, of Clemson University in South Carolina.

Also among the winners is Devashish Basant, a political science undergraduate student at Hunter College in New York City who arrived in the United States as a 7-year-old asylum seeker from Nepal.

Basnett of Hicksville, New York, 22, said he’s proud to represent the communities he comes from, especially as a producer of New York City’s public schools.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the selection process is nearly complete for the second year in a row.

Also, for the first time in about 25 years, Claremont McKenna College, Mount Holyoke College, and Union College were awarded a scholarship.

All 32 researchers are expected to begin their studies at Oxford University in October.
