Ormond Beach’s business gets creative ahead of Small Business Saturday

Ormond Beach, Florida. Small shop owners are banking on Saturday for small businesses to catch up a year after the pandemic.

“Small business Saturday is usually our biggest event of the year with the whole community,” said Joy Myers, owner of Joyologie in Ormond Beach.

Owners like Myers are spending nearly two years in a pandemic, and now, supply chain issues are significantly increasing the cost of items or delaying shipping.

“We had to get more swimwear from Colombia, and then go with some big brands that you knew would have the ability to get stuff from China,” Myers said.

Creativity is something many shopkeepers do this week to prepare.

Down the street, Neighborhood Surf Shop owner Amanda Fricks said they’ve changed a lot of the artwork and items they carry that will be on shelves Saturday.

“With all the borders closed, we couldn’t get fair trade products, so we had a lot of local artists, so we kind of changed our gears,” she said.

The National Retail Federation expects Americans to shop in record quantities this week.

Frick said art, local produce, and spending more upfront to get other products this year will help keep their shelves stocked.

“We bit the bullet, we bought a bunch of stuff. We have a lot of great items. We’re kind of hoping that people will come out and be aware of the local businesses and stores.”

In Daytona Beach, Miguel Nin, owner of the Daytona cigar shop, said the past year has been a challenge to bring in business.

“We have more people walking in the doors but people are making it easier and not spending as much, and that’s okay, and we understand the times,” he said.

He said he also faces challenges with supply and shipping before the big day, but he also makes his own cigars, which he offers at low prices and he hopes people will buy on Saturday.

“I pray on the grounds for people to walk when it comes to them because when it comes to them, I can stay open and send my kids to school,” he said.
