Representative Val Demings condemns threats of violence ahead of Gosar vote of censure

Today the House of Representatives will vote to impeach and remove Arizona Representative Paul Gosar from his committee. Representative Gosar, a Republican, tweeted a video that included filming of the killing and assault of elected officials, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“I’ve worked to stop violence in our community for 27 years as a law enforcement officer,” Representative Demings said. “When did we as a nation begin debating whether violence is OK? This is about simple right and wrong. Violent rhetoric has led to multiple mass shootings. It is unacceptable, not who we are, and it must stop before it kills more people.”

“This is more than just a vote today,” she continued. “We have seen an increase in violence across our nation. Civil servants and members of Congress of both parties have received death threats inspired by violent and divisive rhetoric while GOP leaders have been silent. GOP leaders in Congress have not spoken out against death threats against their party members. Come Their political ambitions are now before the safety of their members and the American public.”

Representative Demings also shared a small sample of the messages she received recently:

  • “There are some white supremacists in Virginia, so be careful out there…yeah–we haven’t forgotten–bitch.”
  • “We’re coming for you and we’ll make you pay.”
  • “She should be shot and I look forward to helping them do that.”
  • “We will collect it and give it what it deserves.”
  • “Time is precious, and you’ll be as dead as one of the first four you get.”

Representative Gosar previously held an event in Orlando, Florida with a white nationalist who attended the “Unite the Right” neo-Nazi rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, propagating the “Great Replacement” theory that inspired many of the mass shootings of white supremacists. The idea of killing state representatives, denied the Holocaust.

“There was a time when leaders rose to the occasion in our country, but today these weak ‘leaders’ are hiding in the corner because they want the position, not the responsibility,” Representative Demings said. When leadership fails, bad things happen. America is a great nation because we resolve our differences by voting, not by bullets. I will always fight for the safety of every American.”
