Saving a Florida Black Bear after spending a month with a jug on its head

Wildlife officials have rescued a black bear in Florida after it wandered around with a plastic jug on its head for nearly a month.

Collier County officials and Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission authorities spent weeks trying to catch the unfortunate bear, and finally catch it in the Golden Gate Estates community in Naples.

The FWC shared the initial call on Facebook, “Bear biologists, law enforcement, and bear contractors set traps and monitored the area in an effort to remove the container,” but after only two sightings, the bear was not seen again for more than three weeks. ”

“Finally, the bear was seen on a resident’s security camera, still wearing the container on its head! The crew set new traps and began night patrols of the neighborhood. They finally spotted the 250-pound bear just before midnight. The biologist rushed it to the bear. Remove the plastic packaging from around her face,” they said of the last encounter.

FWC officials say they believe the plastic jug was part of an animal feeder and that a kidney on the other end allowed the bear to continue eating and drinking for the entire month it was trapped.

They wrote, “Even after 28 days of wearing it, the bear was still in great physical shape! She had a cut surrounding her neck and face where the feeder was stuck, but the staff cleaned up the injury and treated her with antibiotics.” “After a day and a half of monitoring to ensure she was healthy and able to eat and drink normally, the staff released the bear into a safe area in the Picayune Strand State Forest.”
