London The organizers of the BRIT Awards announced Monday that they are canceling two separate categories of male and female artists in a change designed to make the music awards more inclusive.

Next year’s Awards will feature UK and World Artist of the Year awards, replacing the male and female awards in each category. Organizers said the change would celebrate artists “for their music and their work only, rather than how they choose to identify themselves or as others see them”.

The 2022 gala will also include four new awards for different genres, decided by public vote: alternative/rock; hip hop/crime/rap; Dance and Folk Acting / R’n’B.

The moves are the latest changes made in response to criticism that the awards have long failed to reflect the diversity of British music. In 2017, the academy of more than 1,000 music industry professionals who select British winners was expanded in an effort to make it more gender balanced and diverse.
